He attended Baylor University, earned a degree in chemistry and then went to medical school in Dallas at the University of Texas Southwestern. He did an internship in general surgery at Wilford Hall Medical Center on Lackland Air Force Base and later did his family medicine residency at the University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha.
He served twelve years on active duty with the US Air Force, and had multiple deployments to the Middle East and Africa as a flight surgeon. He has sixteen years experience in primary care and worked another ten years as a full-time emergency medicine physician. He has two fantastic adult children, one in medical school and the other a US Marine intelligence officer.
