Christine Hunter, MD

Dr. Hunter is a seventh generation Charlestonian. She was born at Roper Hospital and raised on James Island, SC. She has always loved the Lowcountry and considers it among the most beautiful areas of the US. Her bio is a story of returning home. She has lived and worked in this area most of her adult life.
Dr. Hunter attended Duke University, graduating with a double major in Electrical and Biomedical Engineering. She returned to the Lowcountry for medical school at MUSC, where she met her husband, Dr. Jairy C. Hunter, of Summerville. During med school, she worked at General Engineering Labs for George and Molly Green, who later founded Water Missions International.
After medical school, she completed a residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology at the Medical College of Virginia in Richmond. Christy again returned home to join Lowcountry Women’s Specialists, where she has worked since 1997. She is Board Certified in Ob/Gyn and is a Fellow of the American College of Gynecology. She has seen the practice and the area grow and change in ways unimaginable over the past 16 years, and she is proud of the work LCWS has done to serve the women and families of the Lowcountry.
Dr. Hunter lives in Summerville with her husband and two daughters, Lily Cate and Ella. The family’s interests include going to the beach, Disney, soccer, ballet, piano and violin. They are active members of East Cooper Baptist Church, and ardent supporters of Charleston Southern University and other non-profit organizations. Dr. Hunter was recently elected to the Board of Trustees of Pinewood Preparatory School in Summerville.
Dr. Hunter’s professional interests include high-risk pregnancy, infertility and minimally invasive robotic surgery, and the management of menopausal symptoms. In addition, she still enjoys delivering babies and working closely with practice employees and her partners. She is happy to be part of a practice with a strong reputation for being leaders in the community.

Jennifer Heinemann, MD

Dr. Heinemann is a Board-Certified fellow of the American Congress of Obstetrics and Gynecology. Born and raised in Georgetown, SC, she attended the University of SC. Having always wanted to take care of people especially women, she received her medical degree from the Medical University of South Carolina. Upon completing her residency at the University of Florida Health Science Center in Jacksonville, she joined Lowcountry Women’s Specialists in 2008, and became a partner in 2009.
Dr. Heinemann specializes in both gynecologic and obstetric care, including endometriosis, infertility, fibroids, polycystic ovarian syndrome and menopause management. She is proficient in robotic surgery as well as both medical and surgical treatments for urinary incontinence/bladder leakage. She finds surgery and helping women get pregnant especially fulfilling.
Dr Heinemann lives in Mt Pleasant and enjoys reading, boating, swimming, walking on the beach, yoga, and traveling with her family. She and her husband John have two girls, a boy, and a dog named Jax.

Martha Cohen, MD

A native of Macon, Georgia and High Honors Graduate of Macon’s Stratford Academy, Dr. Cohen and her parents spent many holidays and Cooper Bridge Run weekends with close family friends in Charleston.

Upon completing her medical education, she found the commitment of Lowcountry Women’s Specialists to match perfectly her desire to join a professional practice that “takes care of patients for life.” Dr. Cohen is accepting new patients.

Dr. Cohen earned her bachelor’s degree in biology and minor in religion at the University of Georgia and was selected for the Center for Undergraduate Research Opportunities research program in the department of Cellular Biology. She volunteered for a partnership between the University’s College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences and the local school system to encourage elementary students to pursue math and science.
Dr. Cohen earned her medical degree from Mercer University School of Medicine where she was awarded the R. Kirby Godsey and Charles H. Jones Medical scholarships.

She completed a four-year Obstetrics and Gynecology Residency Program at the Medical Center of Central Georgia/Navicent Health where she served as Chief Resident and received the Society of Maternal Fetal Medicine Residency Program Award for Excellence in Obstetrics and the Obstetrics and Gynecology Resident Teaching Award. As a resident, Dr. Cohen served in leadership roles with the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology District IV.

Dr. Cohen’s research has focused on use DaVinci Firefly Scope for ureter visualization and prevention of ureteral injury and on infectious disease transmission in pregnancy.

She has presented on serous borderline tumor, endometriosis, corneal ectopic pregnancies, obstetric critical care, cervical cancer screening, among other topics. Additionally, she has a strong focus on menopause management.

Dr. Cohen enjoys spending time with her husband, J. Slade Edwards, a partner in a Charleston law firm, and her two sons.

She enjoys travel, tennis, boating, cooking, fishing with her husband, and everything about the Lowcountry.

Ronnie Givens, MD

Dr. Givens joined Lowcountry Women’s Specialists in 1999 and achieved full partner status in 2001. He practices both Obstetrics and Gynecology, and he is accepting new patients. Dr. Givens has significant expertise in the specialized field of robotic and minimally invasive surgery, and his interests include benign gynecologic conditions, as well as routine and complicated obstetrics. He is particularly interested in the management of endometriosis, fibroids, as well as other complex gynecologic surgeries and menopause management.

Dr. Givens also serves as a da Vinci robotic preceptor, one of only three in the Lowcountry, and helps teach other surgeons around the country how to use the da Vinci robotic surgical system.

Dr. Givens is the Chairman of the Perinatal Morbidity and Mortality Committee, past Chairman of the Department of Women and Children, and is a member of the Robotic and Minimally Invasive Surgery Department at Trident Health System.

Dr. Givens is married, has two children, and he enjoys traveling, boating, and spending time with his family.
