Susan Hope Klein is a Doctor of Nursing Practice and is board certified as a Family Nurse Practitioner and Advanced Oncology Certified Nurse Practitioner. Her career in medicine began when she enlisted in the United States Navy and trained as a Hospital Corpsman, Emergency Medical Technician, and Radiation Technologist.
She earned an Associate of Science degree in Radiation Technology from George Washington University and subsequently graduated from the Pennsylvania State University with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing and a Public Health Certification. After leaving the Navy she went on to serve in several administrative nursing roles before returning to her true love: direct patient care. Desiring a more independent role, Dr. Klein returned to graduate school at the University of San Diego, earning both a Master of Science in Nursing and a Doctor of Nursing Practice degree. Her doctoral work focused on cancer survivorship- using evidenced based guidelines to provide individualized education, recommendations, resources, and support with the goal of improving overall health status and health related quality of life in this population.
While feeling rewarded in her career in oncology/hematology, palliative care, and pain management, the increasing demand to see more patients in less time led to frustration and discouragement as she was unable to address the root causes of many of the disease of lifestyle affecting her patients and provide the complete spectrum of care patients need and deserve for optimal health outcomes. While our current health care system continues to embrace a “sick care model,” emphasizing medications and procedures AFTER disease and disability have occurred, Dr. Klein now practices in a setting allowing her time to get to know her patients holistically, and where she can provide comprehensive education and support, increasing the chances of successful lifestyle changes, thereby preventing, and possibly reversing the effects of diseases of lifestyle.
With more than 35 years of experience, Dr. Klein’s practice focuses on hormone optimization, weight management, and aesthetics. She continues to serve the oncology community as the Medical Advisor on the Board of Directors of North County Cancer Fitness: a non-profit dedicated to improving the quality of life for those affected by cancer through programs of fitness, education, referral, and social connection.
