Welim Azinge, MD

Dr. Welim Sonye Azinge – McIntosh was born in Lagos, Nigeria, and immigrated to the United States at age 21. Her career path exemplifies service. She is proud veteran of the

United States Air Force and was a Math and Science teacher with the Los Angeles Unified School District.

She is a graduate of the American University of the Caribbean School of Medicine where she was the President of the Student National Medical Association and the Medical Microbiology tutor.

On graduation day, she was presented with the Susan V. Atchley award for outstanding community service and dedication to the people of St. Maarten, St Maarten Academy Award of recognition and a letter of appreciation for positive influences on life of St. Maarten youths, specifically for creating a tutoring program for local students that produced a100% pass rate at their high school exit examination. Till date Dr. Azinge describes this as her best medical school graduation present.

She comes from a family of physicians.

She fondly refers to her late father, a physician, as her mentor and inspiration. “I could not help falling in love with medicine as I watched my father examine his patients.” Her late maternal uncle was also a physician and she has an older and younger sibling who are physicians as well as many cousins who also are physicians. “Kind of nice to have free consults when I need them.” She is married to Professor Iain McIntosh and they have 2 children.

Dr. Azinge is a Board-Certified Family Medicine Physician, who is a graduate of the University of New Mexico Rural Family Medicine Residency Program. Her residency training had a unique focus on underserved medicine. She has been in the Imperial Valley since 2013, providing mainly inpatient hospital care.

She is excited to be opening her new Family Medicine practice in El Centro. She will continue to work as a hospitalist in the Imperial Valley and will also provide addiction medicine and substance abuse treatment.
